Borewell for Piezometer as per CGWA - Allegiance Water
Management
A Piezometer is a borewell or tube well used only for measuring the water level and for water quality testing1. As per the guidelines of the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), the installation of a Piezometer is mandatory if the groundwater withdrawal is more than 10,000 liters per day.
Here are some general guidelines for the installation of Piezometers for compliance with No Objection Certificate (NOC) from CGWA:
The Piezometer should be installed/constructed at a minimum of 50 m distance from the pumping well through which groundwater is being withdrawn.
The diameter of the Piezometer should be about 4” to 6”1.
The depth of the Piezometer should be the same as in the case of the pumping well from which groundwater is being abstracted.
If more than one Piezometers are installed, the second Piezometer should monitor the shallow groundwater regime.
The measuring frequency should be monthly and accuracy of measurement should be up to cm.
For measurement of water level, sounder or Automatic Water Level Recorder (AWLR) with telemetry system should be used for accuracy.
The measurement of water level in Piezometer should be taken, only after the pumping from the surrounding tube wells has been stopped for about four to six hour.
The groundwater quality has to be monitored twice in a year during pre-monsoon (May/June) and post-monsoon (October/November) periods.
Allegiance Water Management provides services for the installation of Piezometers and ensures that the data is recorded as per the government norms. They also provide other water management services.
