Pond Rejuvenation
Allegiance Enterprise has undertaken Pond Rejuvenation project that aims to restore and conserve India’s degraded pond ecosystems. These ponds play a crucial role in achieving sustainable development goals by providing essential ecosystem services such as flood control, nutrient retention, and carbon sequestration. Unfortunately, the value of ponds is often underestimated compared to larger water bodies.
The project focuses on holistic restoration strategies, including policies, incentives, and innovative technologies. Here are some key aspects of the project:
Nature-Based Solutions (NBS): NBS offer a sustainable and cost-effective approach to restoring natural processes in ponds. By implementing NBS, the project aims to regenerate degraded pond ecosystems.
Linkage with Circular Economy: The project assesses the relationship between the pond ecosystem and the circular economy. Encouraging a regenerative system for biodiversity conservation is a crucial aspect of this approach.
Recommendations for Restoration and Conservation:
Establish a uniform waterbody classification system applicable to all water bodies, including small ponds, for better administration and monitoring.
Create a comprehensive national pond database to facilitate objective policymaking and intervention.
Integrate pond conservation into sectoral development plans and sustainable development goals.
Adopt a coordinated inter-ministerial and inter-departmental approach for effective pond conservation and restoration.
