Pond rejuvenation

Pond rejuvenation is a process aimed at restoring degraded pond ecosystems to improve their ecological health and the services they provide. In India, this is particularly important as ponds play a significant role in biodiversity conservation, flood control, nutrient retention, and carbon sequestration. However, due to urban expansion, agricultural intensification, and other environmental changes, many ponds have become degraded.

Policy Reforms: Implementing a uniform waterbody classification system to ensure better administration and monitoring across all states.

Technological Interventions: Utilizing technologies like environmental-DNA (e-DNA), life cycle assessment (LCA), and ecohydrological measures for effective restoration.

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS): Adopting sustainable and cost-effective methods to restore the pond’s natural processes, such as planting native vegetation and creating habitats for local wildlife.

Community Engagement: Involving local communities in the conservation efforts to ensure the sustainability of the rejuvenation projects.
