Pond Rejuvenation project
The rejuvenation of water bodies, including dry ponds, is a crucial endeavour for sustainable water management. Here are some notable initiatives related to pond rejuvenation:
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) - Har Khet Ko Pani (HKKP):
The Government of India provides financial assistance for the repair, renovation, and restoration of water bodies, including ponds. This falls under the Repair, Renovation, and Restoration of Water Bodies component of PMKSY-HKKP.
Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) and Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch The Rain (JSA:CTR):
JSA, launched in 2019, focuses on water conservation and rejuvenation. JSA:CTR, initiated in 2021, aims to catch rainwater and prevent waterlogging. These campaigns involve renovating traditional and other water bodies, geo-tagging, and removing encroachments.
Census of Water Bodies:
The government launched the first Census of Water Bodies to develop a national database of all water bodies in the country. This effort helps track their condition and plan rejuvenation projects.
Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT):
AMRUT’s Water Supply sector includes rejuvenation of water bodies. Several projects have been completed or are ongoing under this scheme, contributing to water conservation and urban transformation.
Groundwater Recharge:
While groundwater management is primarily a state subject, the central government supports programs for conservation and effective rainwater harvesting. Measures include increasing groundwater levels and implementing rainwater harvesting structures.
