Pond rejuvenation projects
Pond rejuvenation play a vital role in enhancing water resources, promoting biodiversity, and mitigating urban challenges. Here are some notable initiatives and approaches:
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) - Har Khet Ko Pani (HKKP):
The Government of India provides financial assistance for the repair, renovation, and restoration of water bodies, including dry ponds, puddles, and wells.
Under this scheme, traditional and other water bodies are renovated, geo-tagged, and their inventory is created.
Encroachments are removed, and desilting is carried out to improve water storage capacity.
Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch The Rain (JSA:CTR):
Launched in 2021, this campaign focuses on rainwater conservation.
It includes rejuvenating traditional water bodies, such as ponds and tanks, to enhance groundwater recharge and mitigate waterlogging issues.
Census of Water Bodies:
The first-ever census aims to develop a national database of all water bodies in India.
This comprehensive inventory facilitates better management and conservation efforts.
Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT):
The AMRUT Scheme under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs includes water supply sector projects.
Rejuvenation of water bodies is a component, with several projects ongoing or completed.
Local Initiatives:
In Gurugram, 75 ponds are being rejuvenated under the Haryana State Government’s Amrit Sarovar Mission.
Heritage ponds in areas like Pataudi, Sohna, Wazirabad, and Badshapur are part of this effort.
Ernakulam has also seen the rejuvenation and beautification of abandoned ponds through joint initiatives.
Community Impact:
Projects like the one by Godrej & Boyce have transformed ponds, benefiting nearby families and improving water availability.
