Rooftop Rain Water Harvesting
Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting is a method where rainwater is captured from roof catchments and stored in reservoirs. By adopting artificial recharge techniques, this harvested rainwater can meet household needs through storage in tanks and can even be stored in sub-surface groundwater reservoirs. The primary purpose of rooftop rainwater harvesting is to make water available for future use. In dryland, hilly, urban, and coastal areas, capturing and storing rainwater is particularly important.
Here are the key components of rooftop rainwater harvesting:
Catchment: The catchment area is the surface that directly receives rainfall. It could be a courtyard, terrace, or unpaved/paved open ground. The terrace (whether flat RCC, sloping roof, or stone roof) contributes rainwater to the harvesting system.
Transportation: Rainwater from the rooftop needs to be carried down to the storage/harvesting system. UV-resistant water pipes of the required capacity are used for this purpose. Gutters and downpipes catch water from sloping roofs, and wire mesh at the mouth of each drain restricts floating material.
First Flush: A first flush device prevents contamination of stored or rechargeable water by potential contaminants from the atmosphere and catchment roof. It also flushes out the water received during the first shower. Additionally, it helps clean silt and other materials deposited on the roof during dry seasons.
Filter: Filters are used to treat water effectively, removing turbidity, colour, and microorganisms. After the first flushing of rainfall, water passes through these filters.
Application Areas:
Rooftop rainwater harvesting systems can be installed in both new and existing buildings.
Harvested rainwater is used for non-potable household activities such as garden watering, toilet flushing, irrigation, laundry washing, and cleaning.
In many parts of the world, harvested rainwater is also used as a drinking water source. It’s worth noting that rainwater is naturally soft, leading to less consumption of washing and cleaning powder.
The savings in potable water can amount to up to 50% of total household consumption with rainwater harvesting.
Remember, rooftop rainwater harvesting empowers communities and contributes to sustainable water management.
