Water Positive - Æ Water Management
The concept of Water Positive goes beyond mere water conservation. It involves actively contributing to the sustainable management and restoration of water resources. Here’s what it entails:
Definition: Being water positive means leaving a positive impact on water ecosystems. Organizations, communities, or individuals aim to conserve and restore more water than they use or deplete. This involves implementing practices and technologies to reduce water consumption, improve water quality, and enhance water availability1.
History: The Water Positive concept originated in the construction industry in the early 2000s. Initially focused on optimizing construction practices, it expanded to other domains due to concerns about global freshwater scarcity. Like the compensation of greenhouse gases (GHG), water positive aims to balance the water footprint by implementing efficiency measures, water purification, aquifer recharge, ecosystem conservation, and other water compensation projects.
Water Impact Assessment: The Water Positive Initiative assesses the environmental impact of water consumption across various industrial domains. It considers both direct and indirect water consumption, including the hidden water value associated with exchanged goods and services. Prof. John Anthony Allan introduced the concept of “Virtual Water,” emphasizing the tangible water exchange value in trade
